AFC Stanground Reserves 1-4 Fenstanton
Fenstanton booked their place in the final of the Hunts Lower Junior Cup with a 4-1 win away at AFC Stanground Reserves.
Adam Buckingham made 2 changes from the starting XI that beat Wisbech St Mary A last week. David Moore and Dion Lee came in for the absent Ross Fairley and Mark Gallagher.
Fenstanton started well and could have been 1-0 up within the first few moments of the game, but Ben Hall fluffed his lines when well placed.
Fenstanton were dominating the game but were often halted by the assistant referee’s flag, and to make matters worse, Fenny found themselves 1-0 at half time, with the Stanground player smashing in the loose ball after an excellent Paul Street block.
Fenstanton came out in the second half blazing and once they had figured out how to stay onside, they equalised with Dion Lee sliding the ball through to Adam Berrill, who kept his composure to roll the ball under the on rushing goalkeeper.
1-1 soon became 2-1, with Salv Merola scoring his first goal of 2016, timing his run to perfection, before firing the ball against the goalkeeper’s legs, but fortunately the ball looped into the goal.
Stanground now needed to attack Fenstanton, so they changed their formation to 4-3-3, but this just meant more gaps for Fenstanton to exploit them, and Ben Fuller put Fenny 3-1 up, latching on to Man of the Match Adam Berrills chipped through ball.
With 10 minutes left to play, Ben Hall raced through, and slotted Fenstanton’s 4th goal, with a rare left footed shot. Game over.
The game ended on an unsavoury note with a Stanground player receiving his marching orders for foul and abusive language.
