Little Downham Swifts 2-5 Fenstanton
Fenstanton made the long trip to Pymoor to face Little Downham Swifts who had won both of their league games this season.
Fenstanton nearly went ahead in the first few seconds of the game when Dion Lee blasted over the bar when he really should have done better. But Downham almost scored themselves when a defensive mix up allowed their winger to get into the area, but he could only hit the legs of the Fenstanton goalkeeper.
Fenstanton were bossing the game and creating numerous half chances with the pacey forward line of Salv Merola, Darren Bryant and Ben Hall often getting behind the defence.
But Downham still had chances, and almost went ahead when one of ther midfielders hit a volley from the edge of the box which Player / Manager Buckingham flew to his right to push away.
Salv Merola scored the game’s opening goal, running past 2 players, before smashing a goal from 20 yards, to put Fenny 1-0 up.
Ben Hall was unlucky not to win 2 penalties just before half time, but Fenny held on to stay 1-0 up at the break
Half Time – Little Downham Swifts 0-1 Fenstanton
Fenstanton dominated the early exchanges of the 2nd half but were caught cold with a Downham counter attack. 1-1.
Fenny then went 2-1 ahead, with the front three combining, with Merola squaring for Bryant to drill in from close range for his 2nd goal of the season.
This was Bryant’s last contribution as he was replaced by 19 year Kieran Heaford, who was Fenstanton’s saviour the previous week.
But it was Downham who hit back with a nervous looking defence not cutting out the ball, allowing the Downham winger to prod in from close range. 2-2.
Fenstanton soon rallied back with Merola scoring his 2nd screamer of the game, this time, left footed from 20 yards. 2-3.
A couple of changes were made with Tristan Young replacing Dale Edwards, and Scott Wilkinson coming on for Ben Hall.
And it was Scott Wilkinson who had a big part to play in Fenstanton’s 4th goal, coasting past 2 defenders and crossing the ball perfectly for Heaford to nod in his 2nd goal in 2 games. 2-4.
To rub salt into the wounds, Merola completed his hat-trick, after Tristan Young threaded a perfect through ball, which Merola ran onto, rounding the keeper to tap home.
