Wisbech St Mary A vs Fenstanton - 02/01/16

Wisbech St Mary A 1-6 Fenstanton

Fenstanton made the long trip to Wisbech St Mary for the first game of the calendar year, and it proved to be a successful one with Fenstanton running out comfortable 6-1 winners.

Buckingham and Tilbury made 2 changes from the team that beat Saffron Crocus just before the Christmas break, with Tom Cody replacing Scott Wilkinson, and Mark Gallagher filling in for DSD, who was out with an Achilles injury.

Fenstanton started off as the better team, on a mud bath of a pitch, with long grass, but found it difficult to get their passing going with the ball often holding up.

We have seen some special goals this year, but Ben Hall’s opener could be the best yet. Fenny’s leading marksman was found by a long crossfield ball, to which he hit first time from the far right hand side of the box, and it flew in the top corner of the goal, before the keeper could move.

WSM got back on level terms a minute later when Fenny failed to clear their lines and the Wisbech St Mary striker smashed home from 8 yards. But it wasn’t long before Fenstanton were back ahead with Ryan Hunt producing a perfect through ball, that Hall raced on to and scored his 2nd goal of the game.

The second half was all Fenstanton, with Ross Fairley causing problems upfront, and he got his reward by getting on the end of Salv Merola’s whipped free kick. 3-1 and coasting.

3-1 became 4-1 when Adam Berrill latched on to another Ryan Hunt through ball to keep his impressive goal scoring run going.

Fairley then bagged his brace, showing good footwork, before slotting through the WSM goalkeeper’s legs.

There was still plenty of time for more and if it wasn’t for the Wisbech St Mary’s keeper’s good display it could have been double figures. But Hall did manage to score the final goal of the game to complete his Hatrick, skinning the defender, despite being fouled and smashing another fine goal into the far top corner.

Mark Gallagher was guilty of missing a host of chances, and if he was here next week, he would have been the main contender to wear the extra small BCM planet dance micro vest during the warm up.

Fenny return to cup action next week with a big semi final showdown against AFC Stanground Reserves in the Hunts Lower Junior Cup.
